Meeting the latest IHO S-63 standard for digital charts

11 Oct 2013
S-63 is the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) standard for the protection of ENC information. It defines security constructs and operating procedures that must be followed to ensure correct operation of the data protection scheme and provides specifications that enable participants to build compliant systems. The IHO has announced that, from 1 January 2014, Edition 1.0 of S-63 will be withdrawn and Edition 1.1 will be the mandatory protection standard.

All ENC users are therefore required to switch to S-63 Edition 1.1 by the end of 2013. Determining whether your ECDIS is compatible with S-63 Edition 1.1 can be done by checking your equipment’s type-approval date. All ECDIS equipment type-approved after 1 January 2009 is compatible. The table below shows compatibility information reported by ECDIS manufacturers.
