This meant equipping the vessel with a knowledgeable, skilled and capable crew who are motivated to facilitate maximum up-time and vessel life-span through correct operation and maintenance, thereby maximising overall efficiency and return on investment.
Damen were commissioned to devise and execute a customised training program prior to delivery. Spanning 14 weeks and taking place in three countries – South Africa, the Netherlands and Ghana – the technical crew (GPHA engineers) and nautical crew (Tug Masters) received comprehensive instruction, guidance and practice for optimal operation of the ASD2810.
Phase 1 – Cape Town
Technical crew:
- two weeks Caterpillar training
- one week Safety training
Phase 2 – the NetherlandsTechnical crew:
- eight weeks comprehensive technical training (incorporating a large amount of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) training) to learn about the technical systems on board their new ASD 2810.
- one week pipe-fitting course
- one week Engine Room Resource Management (ERM) training.
- for the group’s electrical engineer, one week training in Electrical Switching.
Nautical crew:
- training at the Damen headquarters
- bridge equipment training at Imtech
- two week course on the brand new Damen-Iskes ASD 360 Control simulator.
Phase 3 – GhanaFollowing completion of these comprehensive technical and nautical crew programs, both crews were brought together for the final phase of training at the client’s location in Tema Harbour. Here, a Damen Training Engineer and Captain provided familiarisation training on board the new vessel. This active in-situ training enabled both crews to get fully comfortable with their vessel and with each other’s way of working. Both crews are now trained to operate together as one highly capable ASD-crew, ensuring optimally efficient ASD tug operation.
